CAMP!!

Welcome to CAMP LITTLE TURTLE!!!

For the next two weeks we will be attending camp at the K-1 building! We have camp leaders visiting to teach camp songs and to show us how to start a fire in the wilderness as we sit in tents. We came up with our own classroom camp name - Camp Little Turtle and will be creating our own camp banner. Yesterday we discussed who had been camping and what it means- out in your backyard, out in the woods, or in cabins. We then graphed and analyzed our findings. At the end of each camp day we will journal about our activities. Enjoy the pictures below.

Winter Gardens

We went out to check our winter gardens last week and they are GROWING!!!! Green, bushy leaves are filling out the frame. The kiddos were so excited to see their radishes, spinach, lettuce, and veggies grow. The children learned that with water, soil, and heat from the sun, they can grow plants:) We also stopped by the frog pond and observed the ducks.

Animal Safari

Last week our class partnered with Mr. Thomas' kindergarten to go on an animal safari! We learned about the country of Rwanda and the African rainforest. We "took a plane, paddled a river, and rode a jeep" to the rainforest so we could research the animals. Before the journey we learned about what to pack to stay safe and have fun. The kids determined they needed hats to protect their heads from spiders and snakes, binoculars to spy animals high in the canopy trees, and hiking boots to protect their feet from water or ground snakes to name a few. We then began the search with our books to record facts and pictures from our observations.

Leprechaun Day!!! Better known as St. Patrick's Day!

Today was a celebration all day long:) We started off the day reading books about St. Patrick's day and leprechauns. We read some books last week to build the anticipation for today. We also had several letters left around the room from a mysterious leprechaun last week which encouraged the children to find him. To incorporate our simple machines knowledge we decided to build a trap today to try and catch the leprechaun. We added wheels and axles, inclined planes, screws, pulleys, levers, and wedges. Our work was not quite up to par.....the leprechaun came and escaped :( We went around the school building following clues he hid. When we made it back to the room we were disappointed to see that he was not here. He did leave us some prizes for our hard work and a note telling us to add more simple machines to the trap. We will try again and maybe next year we can catch that little fellow.
