Leprechaun Day!!! Better known as St. Patrick's Day!
Today was a celebration all day long:) We started off the day reading books about St. Patrick's day and leprechauns. We read some books last week to build the anticipation for today. We also had several letters left around the room from a mysterious leprechaun last week which encouraged the children to find him. To incorporate our simple machines knowledge we decided to build a trap today to try and catch the leprechaun. We added wheels and axles, inclined planes, screws, pulleys, levers, and wedges. Our work was not quite up to par.....the leprechaun came and escaped :( We went around the school building following clues he hid. When we made it back to the room we were disappointed to see that he was not here. He did leave us some prizes for our hard work and a note telling us to add more simple machines to the trap. We will try again and maybe next year we can catch that little fellow.

Dr. Seuss's Birthday!
Dr. Seuss's birthday was this past weekend and we just ADORE him in the 1st grade!~
Dr. Seuss books are many of the first books your child is exposed to as a developing reader. So it is only appropriate to celebrate his birthday all week! Yesterday we read One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish and discussed the pattern of rhyme that Dr. Seuss is known for using in many of his books. We created a class book making our own rhymes about the little fish from his book. See a few examples below.
Today we read Dr. Seuss favorites with Mr. Thomas' kindergartners! Then we decorated Cat in the Hat hats to wear all day in celebration. See the fun below and stay tuned for tomorrow's activities!
